Steve Cropper says when he’s out to lunch or picking up some groceries, “Other people notice it before I do.”
“They say, ‘Do you hear that?’ And I say, ‘Hear what?’”
Then, he’ll hear it. It’s him. His guitar, sliding up and down its neck at the beginning of Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man.”
“Play it, Steve!” Sam Moore exclaims on the 1967 recording, as Cropper’s guitar lets out a high howl.

Call it irony.
Clanging sounds of hammers in the hands of construction crews reverberated across the back parking lot of the famed RCA Studio A on Saturday. The noise emanated from a multimillion-dollar development under construction on Music Row. A new development that hovers over the west side of the historic recording studio. A studio that would’ve become another multimillion-dollar development had it not narrowly avoided the wrecking ball last year — just shy of its 50th anniversary.
But Saturday wasn’t about irony, it was about celebration.

When Steve Cropper finally got a chance to work with Percy Sledge, he did everything he could to make it happen — regardless of the cost.
In fact, as producer Saul Davis remembered in the wake of Sledge’s sad passing yesterday at the age of 74, Cropper “came to L.A. on his own dime” to participate in sessions that would produce Percy Sledge’s Grammy-nominated Blue Night in 1994.
There couldn’t be any higher praise for Sledge. After all, Steve Cropper extensively collaborated with one of the all-time greats in Otis Redding.

Blues legend B.B. King has died in Las Vegas at age 89, his lawyer says. The one-time farmhand brought new fans to the blues and influenced a generation of musicians with his heartfelt vocals and soaring guitar on songs such as “The Thrill Is Gone.” King sold millions of records worldwide and was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Steve says, of King’s passing: This time the World has lost a friend. BB King was friends to everybody. To listen to his music will seem like he is still here. One of God’s most “Beautiful People”, an inspiration to everyone.

The past few weeks have been a toughie. We have lost Bobby Keys (Tenor for the Stones), Don Davis(Producer of many hits including,”Who’s Making Love”, Johnny Taylor), Wendy Rene(STAX artist), Larry Henley (Song Writer- ‘Wind Beneath My Wings” “Peanut Butter”) and John Fry (Owner of Ardent Studios, Memphis). These were close friends and associates. When you get my age, which I feel is still young, it’s expected but it sure isn’t fun. God bless them and their families.

I don’t think it would be too large an embellishment of the facts to state that almost everyone reading this article will either recognise Steve Cropper, be well-acquainted with his prodigious musical output, or more than likely be familiar with both the man and his work. Allthingsnorfolk tracked him down in Russia and asked a few questions about his career ahead of a visit to the UK.
